This is the kind of book I'm talking about wanting to read when requesting a novel published by Entangled. Surely, I've read two books by Melissa Chambers before, so I knew what I got myself into. I even looked forward to it. I was bit more disappointed in the second novel I read by her, but now Courting Carlyn had me feeling really good again.
I'm not a sports person. Like, at all. I used to be a dancer, but that's about it. Which is why I was surprised, finding myself liking the idea of two tennis obsessed people, finding their way in lives and finding each other. There was a lot of sports involved in this book, but it never bored me. Maybe also because I just recently played tennis for the first time and actually really enjoyed it. But yeah... Back to the book. I liked reading about how determined Carlyn was about getting into the tennis team she wanted to, how she pushed herself and still enjoyed what she did. You don't get that a lot. And then there's Vaughn, who seemed so much older than he actually was in the book. Already a celebrity, I assumed he was in his twenties. Turns out he's just eighteen. I have no idea about these kind of things, but it sure seems like even teenagers are known in the business.
Carlyn and Vaughn are both really stubborn characters, but the way they acted around the kids in camp they were looking after, or even the way they acted around each other, was totally different from their usual personalities. Or an addition. People will probably say the two of them were too predicted, and sure.. A bit, maybe. But it's really about their paths, I think. Also, about how much of an adult some of us need to be, even at a young age. Those parts really broke my heart, but I liked the way this novel still stayed true to itself and remained a light read.
It was refreshing to see how Carlyn's character changed through the pages. You could actually follow her become more self-confident and more adult. And with her help, Vaughn cracked and wasn't his all-too-serious self anymore. They were good for each other and it still seemed so natural.
If you're looking for a sweet romance on the last days of this year's summer, I suggest you pick this one up. It's worth it!

I am so sorry to say this, but I really forced myself to read this book. I usually really like the light young adult romances Entangled publishes and I hoped I'd like this one especially, since it's the nerdy type of book. But I didn't. The author wrote a book, but it's mainly about gaming itself. It was like a written step-by-step online game. Everything was described, the world, the avatars, the charakters, their power, their motive, the mission. And while I'm sure a lot of readers really appreciated that, I didn't. Because I didn't care. I didn't want a game instruction. But the novel is basically that. With a little romance involved.
I'm sure it's meant to be sweet and there were parts I liked - for example Katie and Alex' new friend, the way the author dealt with her and her story. That was nice. And sure, Alex and Katie themselves were adorable too, but unfortunately it was either always: "Oh, no. I can't be with her" from Alex' side or just these game instructions I told you about. Not much else.
So, this is probably the shortest review I have ever written. And I am so sorry about how harsh I may appear to be, but Playing Her Secret Crush just wasn't for me.

Sie kommen aus unterschiedlichen Welten.
Und doch sind sie füreinander bestimmt.
Ruby ist am Boden zerstört. Noch nie hatte sie für jemanden so intensive Gefühle wie für James – und noch nie wurde sie so verletzt. Sie wünscht sich ihr altes Leben zurück – als sie auf dem Maxton Hall College niemand kannte und sie kein Teil der elitären und verdorbenen Welt ihrer Mitschüler war. Doch sie kann James nicht vergessen, vor allem nicht, als dieser alles daransetzt, sie zurückzugewinnen…
Zugegeben, ich meide Bücher, die bis in den Himmel gelobt werden. Das macht mich meist nur skeptisch, statt neugierig. Aber nachdem ich die Again-Reihe von Mona Kasten bereits verschlungen und geliebt - trotz meiner Vorbehalte - habe, ist es ein Muss für mich, auch die Maxton-Hall-Reihe zu lesen. Das erste Buch, Save Me, war unglaublich toll. Es vergingen nur Sekunden, in denen es mir möglich war, das Buch aus der Hand zu legen. Das ist der Autorin mit Save You ebenfalls gelungen, jedoch leider mehr aus dem Grund, dass mich eben der erste Teil derart begeistert hatte, dass ich hoffte, der neuste Band würde dies ebenfalls können.
Es war... Gut. Vorhersehbar, etwas in die Länge gezogen (weshalb ich mich immer noch frage, wie Mona Kasten es schaffen will, einen dritten Band mit der Geschichte vollzustopfen), aber mehr als gut eben nicht wirklich. Ich denke, nach einem ersten Teil ist es eine sehr große und schwierige Herausforderung mit denselben Charakteren etwas Gutes zu schaffen - gezwungenermaßen, wie die Autorin Colleen Hoover einmal sagte, müssen sich die Protagonisten in Romanen voneinander trennen, damit die Story überhaupt einen neuen Sinn bekommt - das Paar wieder glücklich werden zu lassen. Ruby und James hatten bereits am Ende von Save Me diesen Part bereits hinter sich, weshalb sich dieser Roman also um die logische Schlussfolgerung dreht: Ihre hoffentlich eintretende Versöhnung.
Es ist also im Grunde meine Schuld. Man weiß, was einen erwartet. Aber hey, ich sage ja gar nicht, dass mir der Roman nicht gefallen hat. Er war trotzdem gut und ich genoss es sehr, die Charaktere noch besser kennenzulernen, einen tieferen Einblick in ihre Welt zu erhaschen. Ebenfalls sehr gut fand ich die verschiedenen Blickwinkel. Nun sehen wir nicht nur James' und Rubys Sichtweise, sondern auch die von James' Schwester Lydia und die von Rubys Schwester Ember. Das gefiel mir sehr! Lydia wuchs mir dadurch immer mehr ans Herz, was ich niemals für möglich gehalten hätte, nach all dem, was zuvor vorgefallen war. Und Ember ist einfach so... schön unschuldig, im Gegensatz zu allen anderen Charakteren. Ihr dabei zuzusehen, wie sie wächst, ist mit das Spannendste, was ich von Save Us, dem dritten Teil, erwarte.
Und dann war da das Ende... Ich weiß nicht, wie ich es formulieren soll. Ich fand es absolut nicht passend. Die Intention erkenne ich bis heute nicht. Für mich war das Ganze einfach nur herbeigezogen. Aber vielleicht - so meine Hoffnung - löst sich alles im nächsten Band auf. Ich hoffe es sehr, denn bisher kann ich einfach nur mit dem Kopf schütteln und mich fragen, wieso um Himmels Willen so etwas passieren sollte. Es wird mir schlichtweg nicht begreiflich.
Gespannt bin ich also auf den nächsten und finalen Band der Reihe trotzdem, denn trotzdem ist die Maxton Hall erfrischend. Mir gefällt diese Welt und zum Glück dauert es nicht mehr allzu lange, bis alle Geheimnisse gelüftet werden.

According to Goodreads, Rachel van Dyken is my fourth most read author. Considering her writing speed, it's only a matter of time until she's in the top spot. And she deserves that, because I adore her so, so much. Her books always put me in a good mood and I'm always looking forward to her latest releases, though they only ever land on my to-read list, because there isn't enough time for me to even try catching up. But I will. I promise, I will. Soon.
Having recently read Cheater by the author, I couldn't help but point of the similarities to Dirty Exes. A lot of it reminded me of that series. And then I was shocked... Because reading about the couples, the love story is almost exactly like in Fraternize, another book that's been published last year by Rachel. Oh, why do you like to tortue me that much?! I didn't like who the main character in Fraternize ended up and I felt like being taken back in time while reading Dirty Exes. I was just as disappointed, I was just as sad. I didn't understand the motives at all. The love story is so similar, I wanted it to be different.
But you know what?! Despite that, I can't be mad at Rachel van Dyken. Because in the end, I think I got it. Alright, that's a flat lie, but I've got to believe there's a reason she did what she did, paired up the couple she paired up. And if a book makes you feel kind of angry, it's still an emotion, and any book causing you emotions is one you most likely won't forget. And then that's a good thing. I just have to have faith in that.
Anyway... The storyline itself is genius! And as always, there's just the right amount of humor in it that can't be mistaken. The author is famous for that and us fans, we love it. The guys are always so alpha-like, but still so super cute in what nerdy comments they're able to shoot. Gah! You always fall in love with them. Always! And then the women might appear shy sometimes, but they're really those confident human beings, admirable, strong and they use their mouths like weapons when they have to.
The idea of spying on your ex-boyfriend because his current girlfriend (or wife) thinks he's cheating is a bit much of a drama, right?! Ha! But you haven't even met Jessie's wife yet. And then Colin, Jessie's best friend, gets in the way, flirting with Blaire like hell. But she's got to focus on her job, right? And now having Jessie back in her life, she starts feelings things again, so yes, you see, it gets really messy, but it's never too much for the reader to handle. Because the reader will have to choose between the two men as well. And let me tell you, it's not an easy choice.
I liked the idea of Blaire and her friend having that company - spying on women's boyfriends in order to help them. It's even more emotional, because you get to find out that Blaire's been cheated on as well. And while I know I would most likely never enjoy this topic in a movie, I couldn't help but love what Rachel van Dyken made of the situation. God, I adore that woman. I really do.
So, yes, of course I'll read the second book in the Liars, Inc. series when it comes out, though it can never be as good as Dirty Exes and I won't agree with the couple. But I think that's the thing here - I can't wait for the author to prove me wrong. To make me fall in love with the next story, make me fall for the next couple, though I would have never seen it coming. Bring it on, Mrs. van Dyken!

I think about 80% of the young adult genre fans of my generation have read Jamie McGuire's Beautiful Disaster series, or at least the first book in the series, featuring Travis Maddox - probably the ultimate hero for any young adult book. And then there are a couple that read other books by the author as well, myself included. And I've got to say, All the Little Lights reminded me so, so much of Happenstance. And in the beginning, I didn't like that. I thought it was all the same, same story, same characters. Nothing made it feel special to me. And it dragged on and on. Honestly, I wasn't sure whether I'd ever like this book.
But then things started getting interesting. Catherine's mother is a bit - and I actually mean a lot - special. You'll know what I mean once you read the book. She's not really looking after her daughter, dealing with her own problems. And I thought I had it all figured out. I thought I knew what the author had intended. With all the strangers you read about, you think the mystery about Catherine's story has to be the obvious. But it's not. I was so surprised by the outcome. It was something different! I liked that a lot. But then once you find out the truth, the book kind of ends. There's no real ending to it, for me at least. I was disappointed by it. After spending many hours reading this book, the ending was rushed.
You'll read about bullies, which is also probably why All the Little Lights reminded me so much of Happenstance. And of course Elliott doesn't care about Catherine being unpopular. He stands up for her when she needs it. And people still look up to him. That's such a clichée thing. Not every boy is handsome and self-confident. I mean, sure, Catherine stands her ground and she's tough enough, but why does Elliott have to be this popular football guy?! Oh why. But I won't complain any further, because in the end I love romantic stories and I shouldn't critize things I liked in other books.
The main idea of the story - of how everything leads to that revelation - is very interesting. And pretty creative, as well. It's just the how to get there that bothered me at some points, some scenes, some decisions of the characters and then how suddenly crime was involved and I couldn't place the book into any genre or category anymore. Which is most likely a good thing for most readers, but I'm way too organized to let the chaos take over. But if you're looking for a mystery read with still a lot of romance in it or if you're a Jamie McGuire fan, you should totally read this one.

Kendall Ryan ist derzeit auf Platz 3 meiner meistgelesenen Autoren. Ganze 15 Bücher habe ich bereits von ihr durch. Und auch wenn ich ihre anfänglichen Werken weitaus besser fand, genieße ich es immer noch, abends auf der Couch zu liegen und einen ihrer humorvollen Romane zu lesen. Nach dem ersten Teil ihrer Roommates-Reihe musste ich einfach wissen, wie es weitergeht. In jedem Buch geht es um andere Charaktere, aber von der Storyline her unterscheiden sich sie (zumindest die ersten beide Teile) nicht wirklich. Deshalb ist es schwer zu sagen, welches mir besser gefallen hat. Sowohl Roommate als auch Play Mate haben mir gut gefallen.
Was mich teilweise wirklich stört, ist die fehlende Tiefe. Die Charaktere scheinen überhaupt gar keine Vergangenheit, bzw. keine Probleme zu haben. Wage Vermutung: So viel wie Kendall Ryan schreibt, kann dies schon einmal auf der Strecke bleiben. Aber das ist nicht notwendigerweise etwas schlechtes. Wenn man keine philosopischen Romane erwartet, wird man auch nicht enttäuscht. Ich habe mich auf ihre Romane eingelassen und finde sie immer noch gut, wenn auch nicht herausragend.
Mir gefallen ihre Ideen. Meist nimmt Kendall Ryan Klischees zur Hand und verwandelt sie in etwas, das man gerne liest, das nicht langweilig wird. Hinzuzufügen ist vielleicht, dass ihre Bücher nicht unbedingt lang sind. Sie bewegen sich meist im 200 Seiten Bereich. Vollkommen in Ordnung - immerhin wird auf diese Weise nichts unnötig in die Länge gezogen und die Charaktere stecken nicht ewig und drei Tage in einem Dilemma fest, was die Nerven des Leser oftmals strapaziert.
Der beste Freund des Bruders... Der Klassiker. Nennt mich kitschig, aber ich mag diese typischen Liebespaare irgendwie. Vorausgesetzt ihre Charaktere sind interessant beschrieben und sie entwickeln sich auf eine natürliche Art. Und eins muss man der Autorin lassen: Bisher fand ich kein Liebespaar von ihr schlecht. Zumindest erinnere ich mich nicht. Außerdem weiß sie Dialoge einzusetzen, das ist ein dickes Plus.
Alles in allem fand ich das Buch gelungen. Es liest sich sehr schnell, aber es wirkt niemals gehetzt. Man erhält einen Einblick in die Köpfe beider Charaktere - Evie und Smith - und sympathisiert direkt mit beiden.

Heute setzt er alles daran, wieder auf die Beine zu kommen. Als sie sich begegnen, stehen Amanda und Chase vor dem Nichts und wollen doch beide dasselbe: glücklich sein. Sie treffen eine Vereinbarung, um ihre Vergangenheit hinter sich zu lassen. Doch was als gewagter Deal beginnt, entwickelt sich schon bald zu so viel mehr.
Es ist schon eine Ewigkeit her, seitdem ich die Ghost and the Goth Reihe von Stacey Kade gelesen habe. Damals hat mich ihr Sinn für Humor total begeistert. Weshalb ich sehr überrascht war, welcher Thematik sich die Autorin in From Scratch - alles neu mit dir widmet. Es kam mehr als einmal vor, dass ich nach gespannt nach Luft schnappte, weil mich die unglaubliche Emotionalität des Buches so sehr bewegte.
Rockstars... Kein Geheimnis, dass ich absolut kein Fan von solchen Glamour-Geschichten bin. Also stand ich der ganzen Sache zu Beginn ein wenig skeptisch gegenüber. Was haben ein Hollywood-Schauspieler und ein Entführungsopfer schon gemeinsam? Und ja, am Anfang wirkt das ganze Kunstrukt ein wenig absurd. Und die Mischung war mir absolut nicht geheuer. Aber dann habe ich mich in beide Charaktere verliebt, je besser ich sie beide kennenlernte - je eher ich ihre Vergangenheit und ihre Gedanken verstand.
Stacey Kade besitzt einen phänomenalen Schreibstil. Ich war vollkommen hin und weg von ihrer Art und Weise, die Geschichte von Amanda und Chase zu erzählen. Trotz all der Schwere, die Amandas Vergangenheit mit sich bringt, hatte ich niemals das Gefühl, das Buch zur Seite zulegen, weil es mich zu sehr belastete. Nein, stattdessen las ich gespannt weiter und freute mich über jeden kleinen Schritt, den Amanda unternahm, um wieder ein normales Leben zu führen. Ihr dabei gewissermaßen zuzusehen, erfüllte mich mit Freude.
Und auch die Wandlung von Chase entging mir nicht. Auch wenn ich mich also zu Beginn fragte, in wie weit sich ihre beiden Welten überhaupt ergänzen könnten, es machte irgendwann Sinn. So unfassbar viel Sinn. Auch wenn es viele Autoren nicht schaffen, ihre Charaktere unabhängig voneinander wachsen zu lassen, das war bei Stacey Kade nicht der Fall. Man konnte zusehen, wie die beiden sich zwar dank ihrer gegenseitigen Anwesenheit zu reiferen Personen heranwuchsen, aber es bestand keine Abhängigkeit. Es war ein Bonus. Aber als Dou waren Amanda und Chase unschlagbar - der reinste Zucker!
Witzig ist, dass die Geschichten und Bücher, die mich am meisten in ihren Bann ziehen, mir die Worte verschlagen. Demnach lesen sich meine Rezesionen wahrscheinlich nicht besonders flüssig oder gut und der Leser wird sich fragen, zu welchem Ergebnis ich am Ende eigentlich kam. Ich kann abschließend lediglich sagen, dass mich From Scratch - alles neu mit dir einfach unglaublich begeistert hat und ich noch viele Tage danach, vollkommen in die Geschichte vertieft war, mir unzählige Gedanken durch den Kopf gingen. Ich denke, das ist immer ein gutes Zeichen. Ein fantastisches Buch!
